Mounting Sexist Claims Against Mr. Hong Kong Contest

Posted by Admin 0 comments
Various male activist groups have rallied against the upcoming Mr. Hong Kong 2010 Contest, which will be held on August 21st. The groups claim that the show is lascivious, belittle men, and resembles a stripper show, yet the program is aired during prime time with young viewers watching. In addition, the all-female judging panel breaches the Sex Discrimination Ordinance law and protesters insist that the show should be stopped or reformatted. The Organization for Justice and Equality, the Federation of Trade Unions, and other interest groups have filed a formal complaint against TVB with the Equal Opportunities Commission.

In response, TVB noted that the all-female audience and judging panel is the program’s unique feature and will adhere to its original approach. TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming said,“We welcome both male and female audiences at our live broadcast venues in Olympian City . Male and female voters can participate in the internet and telephone voting on the evening of the contest, but in order to preserve the program’s unique flavor, we will only allow females among the live audience.”

Despite the recent controversy, the Mr. Hong Kong 2010 candidates appeared at a promotional event the day before. After a round of questions, a committee awarded contestant #10, William Chak, with the Most Charming Financial Talent Award. At a previous event, William had already won the Tourism Ambassador Award.

Regarding recent protests that the Mr. Hong Kong contest was sexist, William said that the contest was a program with an entertainment aspect. As a contestant, William did not feel that the program contained any features which involved sexual harassment. The goal was to entertain and make the viewers happy. He believed that the female judges would not touch any sensitive regions of the male body. William noted that the contest organizers did not prohibit the contestants from touching the female judges. Perhaps William may shake hands with the judges on that night. Some interest groups mentioned that the selected Mr. Hong Kong winner was without dignity. William said, “I have no comment, this is not for me to say. I will follow TVB’s policies for the contest.”

TVB insists on original all-women audience approach for 'MR. HK' despite male group protests

Posted by lucychoi559 0 comments

TVB's Mr. Hong Kong has gotten involved in male rights, where a group of males protest on the sex discrimination. Yesterday Legislative Council member (Wong Kwok Hing), a group of concerning Hong Kong gentlemen, the Equal and Justice Association and the Love Family and Parents Association jointly filed complaints to the Equal Opportunities Commisson. They were disatisfied with their response and are now considering to start a protest on TVB.

The men feel that both sexes should be equal. TVB should not have an all-women panel of judges and the touching of the contestants are out of control. It is sexual harassment and is not respectful. They only ask for elected Mr. Hong Kong to be able to make Hong Kong proud. Actually in the last several years, they have showed their dissatisfaction to TVB and only ask for 10 tickets, but TVB ignored it, so they started this complaint. The men strongly stressed that their actions is absolutely gentlemen and reasonable. But, on TVB's side production has not been affected due to this incident.

Yesterday the 10 Mr. HK contestants attended the promotional event as usual and did not get affected by the protest. Among them, William Chak (#10) won the "charming" award live on the spot and has an opportunity to give the guest Alvina Kong a kiss. Towards the protest on sex discrimination, as a hot favourite William said: "I have no comment, this is TVB's policy. Every person has their own persepctive. (Do you feel that an all women judging system is unfair?) No because it is the contest's requirements, if going to participate then going have to follow the policies. (If there is an amendment for some male audience?) I don't mind, it is just like doing a show, just as long as their willing to come into the show and watch, do not need to worry about what kind of people they are or what nationality. (Did TVB prohibit the guest from touching?) I haven't been notified yet, I personally won't avoid it, shaking hands is a generous act. (The group of protesting men have no dignity?) I won't assess them, it is not for me to say."

TVB Foreign Affairs Director (Tsang Sing Ming) said, that night the recording studio will maintain an all-female audience. The Olympian City and other venues includes both men and women. TVB has heard about the public opinions, but the production being an all-women audience is the program's characteristics and insist on continuing with the original approach.

Miriam Yeung fears Real Ting jealous, not inviting Louis Koo to concert

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 Posted by lucychoi559 0 comments

Miriam Yeung will be holding her first Hong Kong Coliseum concert in October since her marriage. Yesterday the organizers announced that 1 more show is addded, making it a 5 show concert in total. It proves that Miriam protected her pop queen status despite becoming Mrs. Ting.

Miriam will not tolerate lost, she will first invite Eason Chan as her guest performer, but does not want to bother Louis Koo, who she was once rumored with. Clearly, she does not want to make Real Ting jealous, being a responsible wife to her husband.

Tickets sold out

Pre-order of tickets to Miriam's concert is full, the e-ticket system is also jammed. Fans have to wait in line to buy tickets for 28 hours for front seats. For this reason, the organizers decided to add another show. Miriam laughed: "Wah! I really found out I'm still good to have after opening this concert!" Towards opening her first concert after marriage, Miriam expressed that there is some emotional barrier. Although there is still pressure, she has confidence that she will do her best. Asked if marriage gave her more energy? Miriam said: "Of course when one reaches this stage in life, one will feel better emotionally. Facing any type of situation, would be more peaceful and calm."

Inviting Eason Chan as guest

Miriam did not avoid inviting very old rumored boyfriend Eason Chan, but the rumor that made the most noise was Louis Koo. She does not want to bother him: "I want to invite Eason to be my guest because we debuted the same year, we have resonance, but he has a busy schedule, not sure if this can happen." About inviting Louis to her solo concerts before, Miriam said: "I saw him earlier, he suggested that he could be the guest. Honestly, last time the concert gave me an unforgettable memory, but this time I don't want to bother him. He is very busy filming movies, but I do hope he'll come to the show." Is she afraid that Real Ting will be unhappy? "It does not have anything to do with Mr. Ting. Once thing I really like about Mr. Ting is that he does not ask me about work."

Couple no disputes, gets along smoothly

It was rumored that Miriam separated from her husband before the show? "Huh? I don't know about this. I am 30+ married woman, I am 10 years late compared to those 20 year olds, I should chase after the 10 years lost. (Why would two people living in the same house be separated?) Are you guys (the media) hiding underneath the house peeping? (Do you guys have any disputes after marriage?) No! I am completely focused on my concert preparations. Mr. Ting supports me greatly. A friend is helping me do the wedding reception stuff, so I don't want to cause too much trouble because I am not good at those things. (Only care about the wedding dress?) Yes, plus I am busy with the concert. I want to add more shows, but I don't know who would order tickets anymore."

TVB plagiarizes again, Linda Chung watches the Mainland drama series to learn about her role

Posted by lucychoi559 0 comments

Following Beauty Knows No Pain and The Mysteries of Love accused of plagiarism, TVB plagiarizes again. This time it's Mainland popular drama Dwelling Narrowness, the TVB version will start next month tentatively titled Men & Women Chooses Residence. The four leading stars Linda Chung, Joyce Tang, Ron Ng and Michael Tse will be entangled in a relationship, while Michael Miu and Sonjia Kwok are a pair. In the series, Linda's role is almost exactly the same as Dwelling's "Hai Zao", both is not hesitant to make immoral transactions to get up top.

Nelson Cheung, the series producer, responded to the obvious plagiarism, he does not feel it's a problem: "Have to share and promote the good stuff. The new series is about housing conflicts. Shanghao and Hong Kong are the same, citizens living in houses face personal problems and the series reveals a secret to the Hong Kong viewers."

As for Linda who is busy filming for Yes Sir, No Sir earlier said yesterday that she already got the Dwelling Narrowness DVDs and plans to watch the series after work: "Producer said this clearly, told me to put in the effort and watch Hao Zao's character. (Obvious plagiarism?) I am talking about artists, it is our responsibility to act out the role well."

This is the third time Sonjia did the ribbon cutting for this bakery, she smiled and said that cutting the ribbon for the third time, besided earning more money, the bakery even gave her a large supply of their products. Because of this, she joked that she has gained some weight, but Sonjia then said: "I lost weight actually, but it's good to gain weight too. I have been busy shooting for the costume drama Jade Palace Lock Heart lately, the temperatures are over 40 degrees C every day, it's really exhausting. (Are you now attacking into Mainland?) Hope so. Today I came back especially for this ribbon cutting ceremony, then I have to go back to Mainland."

As to rumored boyfriend Michael Tao recently having rumors, Sonjia coldly expressed: "Don't care about it so much. For my own love life, I am currently just waiting for it to come, can't rush it." Speaking of Miriam Yeung's earlier support for "the remaining women" on Weibo, Sonjia said that although she's single, she's still living happily: "No worries, no troubles. But when I get married in the future, I will definitely let everyone know. But if dating, not necessarily, right now I really don't have a boyfriend, it's been many years since I dated!"

Artistes feel pity for Nicholas Tse's old 'scapegoat case' due to recent court case

Posted by Admin 0 comments
Kemal Bokhary's niece Amina Bokhary cause of assaulting a Hong Kong police officer is upheld and has caused anger to the entire city. Artists are leaving messages on Weibo and expressing their doubts on the judicial system on interviews. People also compared this case with Nicholas Tse's "scapegoat case" that happened years ago and felt pity for him. Currently in Shandong filming, Nicholas did not want to respond.

As Nic's good friend Edmond Leung wrote on his Weibo yesterday: "So does that mean people can just randomly assault the HK police that we HK citizens respect most.. what now? My old buddy Nicholas Tse's case a few years ago was pretty unfair." Michael Tse received a sentence before for drunk driving, his wife Tina wrote on Weibo questioning why Amina can just get away with assaulting police 3 consecutive times. Kenneth Ma attended an event and expressed his pity for Nic's case. He said: "Should I say I have some psychological problem or some money hungry illness so I can go rob someone?"

Notes: (from wiki)
- Kemal Bokhary is a known judge in Hong Kong.
- Amina Bokhary is known to suffer from bipolar and attention deficit disorder, depression and alcohol abuse. She is often in trouble with the law assaulting police, possession of drugs, drunk driving.
- The Nicholas Tse's "scapegoat case" refers to the 2002 Ferrari car accident. He was initially claimed as the driver responsible, later ICAC investigated the case and actually 3 other men and a police officer was involved too. Nic was charged of obstruction of justice suit and the court ruled him guilty. Nic spent 14 days in prison and served 240 community service hours. At the time, many felt Nic's sentence was light, but that was the maximum for that offense.

Interview with female cast of "Beauty Knows No Pain": “Middle-aged Women – Stand Tall and Be Strong!”

Posted by Admin 0 comments
Introduction

During different stages of life, different issues emerge – this of course applies to middle-aged women as well.

Four women who have reached the ‘middle-age’ mark – Maggie Cheung, Joyce Tang, Elena Kong, and Michelle Yim – got together recently to refute the ‘myths’ that many people have of middle-aged women. Maggie talks candidly about society’s use of the phrase “敗犬” [TN: literally translated “defeated dog”] to refer to unmarried middle-age women; Michelle cleverly discusses the concept of “中年雙失”[TN: “middle-age double loss”]; and Joyce agrees with Elena’s opinion that being the 3rd party in a relationship is ‘asking for trouble’.

J = Joyce
E = Elena
Y = Michelle
M = Maggie

Question 1: One myth regarding middle-aged women – plastic surgery! No matter how pretty a woman is, she is no match for the ‘passing of time’ and eventual old age. Therefore, it seems that plastic surgery has become the ‘life-saver’ for women who do not want to lose their beauty with age. So how do these 4 beauties (Joyce, Elena, Maggie, Michelle) view plastic surgery?

J: If one is ugly, it does become a bit of a hindrance psychologically. I feel that there is nothing wrong with plastic surgery, as long as one is careful not to become obsessed about it – since it is very easy to continue having surgery after surgery once started. Of course, it’s best to not alter one’s appearance if at all possible. Actually, as long as a woman possesses confidence, she is already a beauty. It’s more important for women to have ‘inner beauty’ – if a woman speaks in a way that is tasteless and insipid, with no meaning to her words, it doesn’t matter how pretty she is on the outside – it’s pointless.

Y: But I feel that if a woman doesn’t have enough confidence and doing a little bit of plastic surgery will give her that remaining boost, I would support it.

E: Actually, I did alter….(the Ladies: What???)…..my teeth! I’m grateful to my family who took me to get braces when I was 13 years old. My teeth used to have a lot of gaps, to the point where I wasn’t able to close my mouth – after I got braces, not only did my teeth become straight and orderly again, my nose also became straighter and I became prettier! However, I had to pay a heavy price for the beauty – at the time, I had 4 teeth pulled in order to accommodate the braces and I was in pain for 3 years!

J: When I was little, I had also wanted to get braces, but after having 4 teeth pulled, the dentist said that my teeth are ‘too thin’ so I couldn’t get them.

M: Elena looks very different now than she did previously? I’m interested in seeing the pictures! In terms of plastic surgery, if it can make one’s physical appearance more pleasing to the eye, I’m not opposed to it, however, absolutely cannot go overboard – one needs to know when to be satisfied and stop.

Question 2: Many young women in Hong Kong have their own careers and are financially independent, but if they reach middle-age and are still single, it’s hard to avoid society’s ‘criticisms’ and gossip – in Japan, they use the words “敗犬” [“defeated dog”] to describe unmarried women….

Y: No one is immune from having enemies – if someone doesn’t like you, they will have a lot of different gossips and ‘nicknames’ for you…there is no need to take what they say to heart.

M: Since there is no way to control what people say, just ignore it!

Y: “敗犬” is just a ‘nickname’ after all.

E: I feel that if I’ve reached middle-age and I’m still single, it’s no one else’s business but mine! As long as I’m happy with my life, that’s all that matters! Again, whether a woman is physically beautiful or not isn’t the most important, as long as she has confidence in herself – if she has confidence, she will automatically have radiance and splendor – this is something that comes from within, no one can ‘give’ it to another.

M: The words “敗犬” – is this actually a phrase that some arrogant man with an inferiority complex came up with??

The Ladies: Yeah!!

E: Yes, it was created so the guy with the low self-esteem could feel better! Haha!

Y: Exactly…why can’t they use a ‘prettier’ nickname?!

J: For instance, the phrase “女優” [TN: literally translated “female superior”] isn’t bad at all!

E: “優女” [TN: literally translated “excellent/superior female”] actually sounds better!

Y: “優女” sounds too much like “憂女” [TN: literally translated “worried female”]. “女優” is actually better, since it means “outstanding woman” according to the traditional Chinese language.

Question 3: Some women persevere with their careers when they are young, but then when they reach a certain age, they’ll discover that they are in a somewhat awkward situation: the single men around them are not worth their time and the ‘good’ men are all already married. If at that point in time, they feel that they are ready to let go of their careers in favor of romance, there is a possibility that they may fall in love with a married man and become the ‘3rd party’ in a relationship without realizing it. If these 4 found themselves in this situation, how would they handle it?

E: If you like someone, there’s nothing that says you have to make it known – there is such a thing as a ‘crush’. Making it known would only break up the marriage – it’s better to just admire from far away! As the saying goes, the most unobtainable things are the best – the moment you try to get closer to ‘obtain’ it, devastation occurs – being a ‘3rd party’ in a relationship is definitely ‘asking for trouble’!

M: I’m the type of person who dislikes troublesome matters; I prefer a simple life where I don’t have to worry about how to handle these types of complicated matters! If I were in a situation where I fall in love with a married man, I would only silently admire him from afar and wouldn’t take any action because if I take action, I don’t know what types of problems will arise – it’s not worth it. If I was truly fated to be with that person, he wouldn’t be married – so there’s no point in forcing things!

J: I completely agree with Elena and Maggie – it’s impossible for a person to possess everything that is the prettiest and the best!

Question 4: Once women reach middle-age, what is the thing they fear the most? Michelle’s character in "Beauty Knows No Pain" loses both her career as well as her marriage. If these 4 were to experience this unfortunate ‘middle-age double loss’, how would they face it?

E: In life, it’s important not to be completely reliant on someone else – not even on your parents, since one day they may no longer be with you. Therefore, the most important thing is to be able to take care of yourself so that even if you lose both career and marriage in middle-age, you can still face it bravely.

M: Having a career means having financial security, having financial security means having independence, having independence means having freedom. There will always be ups and downs in life, so it’s necessary to plan ahead and be prepared – this way, there’s no need to be afraid of change.

E: Also, for those who are currently in a ‘high position’ in their careers, they must be prepared to ‘start over’ so that even if they lose everything, they are not afraid to take jobs such as a bank teller, waitress, etc. – don’t let the grandness of the past become a burden – nothing in this world lasts forever.

J: Even if you are married, don’t lose touch with the world. Don’t become entirely dependent on one person because if that person leaves you, it will be like the end of the world. A married woman still needs to maintain her own circle of friends. Since a long time ago, Maggie has been telling me: “Love yourself and be strong!”

Encourage women to stand tall and be strong

Y: To be honest, one purpose of this interview is to give some encouragement to women who have encountered these types of difficult situations and show them how to stand strong. The first thing is to put their lives back in order mentally and emotionally and to remember that it’s not the end of the world – continue to get to know more people, read the news so that they are on the same page with the rest of the world, work hard to save money, and prepare for the unexpected. Good things don’t last forever, so it’s necessary to learn to have an optimistic attitude and turn negative situations into positive ones. This way, nothing can stop them.

J: That’s right! For instance, if you break up with someone, you can think of it as having more freedom now – it may sound silly, but thinking positively will only do you good, not harm.

Epilogue

There’s a saying in Chinese that ‘three women make a crowd and four women make gossip’…but these 4 actresses who came together for the series "Beauty Knows No Pain" are opposite – instead of being a ‘crowd’, they have built a deep friendship that continues long after the series is over. Asked how they are able to have such a close relationship, Michelle smiles and responds: “Because we are very mature in our thinking and understand how to show tolerance – plus all 4 of us are the type of people who take our work seriously and are very focused, so it makes us very comfortable with each other.”

Out of the 4 women, Michelle has had the most life experiences and so has developed a unique perspective on many situations. Therefore, oftentimes, when her friends encounter difficult situations, they like to seek her advice. She feels that through television and movies, one can learn a lot about the realities of human life, so when some of her girlfriends encounter marriage issues, she would tell them to watch Stephen Chow and Sandra Ng’s film "Love is Love", which brings out the lesson that married women still need to advance together with the times, or else they could be left behind.

Asked what she thought about the young models coming out with sexy picture books, Michelle smiled again and said that young people are interested in that kind of stuff because they most likely want to capture the beauty that they have via photos while young so they can reminisce when they get older. Unfortunately though, the picture books that have been released in recent years have gone more and more in the wrong direction, to the point where it has created an unhealthy atmosphere in society.
