Hong Kong film industry is growing in strength as its production quantity and overall box office continue to climb. According to the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association's 2012 Hong Kong film market summation, the 2012 total box office exceeded HK$1.55 billion, a rise of 11.75% from 2011's 1.39 billion.
The year's total film release quantity rose 8.7% from 2011 as well. 2012 had 300 first run releases, 50 were Hong Kong films. In 2012 the total box office was HK$1,555,691,013, an obvious rise from 2011's 1,392,170,518.
The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Ka Fai starred COLD WAR (HONG JIN) with 42.68 million was last year's highest grossing Hong Kong film. The film is still in release. In second and third were VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) with 30.06 million and LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) with 27.97 million; A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH), which brought overseas honors and seven Best Actress awards to Deanie Ip Tak Han, came in fourth with 27.87 million.
Topping the foreign film box office was MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS with 96.7 million, making it the 2012 box office champion. In second was THE DARK KNIGHT RISES with 80.26 million, in third was THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN with 61.98 million.
Although Hong Kong film box office was no match for foreign film's, COLD WAR won back some dignity for local films as it landed 5th in the total box office. It even bested Ang Li's LIFE OF PI and the James Bond film series SKYFALL. It was also the only Hong Kong film to break into the top 10.
