Eric Tsang Helps Resolve TVB’s Big Four Music Contract Dispute
Wednesday, October 19, 2011
Yesterday, Oriental Daily revealed that a turning point was reached in the former deadlock dispute between TVB and the Hong Kong Recording Industry Alliance, dubbed as the Big Four Recording Companies, which included EMI Group, Sony Music, Universal Music, and Warner Music Group. Since TVB’s majority stakeholder, Charles Chan (陳國強), was caught in the a stalemate with the Big Four Recording Companies for a period of time, he asked good friend, Eric Tsang (曾志偉), to intervene on TVB’s behalf. Due to Eric’s good relations with Universal Music’s executive management, there was a turnaround in the deadlock, bringing the contract negotiations back to the table. As a result of Eric’s intervention, TVB and the Big Four Recording Companies have reached an agreement regarding the royalty distribution. An outstanding issue in the contract negotiations was whether singers partnering with TVB will be allowed to appear on other rival television stations. The reporter contacted Eric Tsang, who was on an airplane at the time and could not respond to the media’s inquiries.
TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming (曾醒明), indicated that there was a turning point in the dispute between TVB and the Big Four Recording Companies. Both parties were sincere in wishing to resolve the contract dispute and meet for further negotiations. The two most critical points in the negotiations involved the amount of the royalties and the terms of the contracted singers.
Mr. Tsang was uncertain whether the contract dispute with the Big Four Recording Companies will be resolved prior the TVB Anniversary. Since the agenda for the TVB Anniversary has already been planned, it will be difficult to incorporate the singers into the TVB Anniversary program.
