Simon Yam is questioned by his daughter: does he love Qi Qi or Sandra more?

Saturday, April 24, 2010 Posted by Admin 0 comments
Newly crowned HKFA Best Actor Simon Yam and wife Qi Qi attended the opening ceremony for Dunhill in Central the day before yesterday. Asked about his feelings toward winning at HKFA, Simon admits that it is hard to hide his happiness. Smiling, he said that earlier, his daughter saw in the newspapers the pictures of him kissing his ‘on-screen wife’ Sandra Ng on the lips but only kissing his real-life wife Qi Qi on the cheek, so she asked him whether he liked Sandra more or Mommy more. Simon laughed and said: “My daughter is very innocent and sweet. I explained to her that in the movie, I love Sandra, however in real life of course I love Qi Qi the most.”

Simon indicated that he is definitely thankful to his ‘on-screen wife’ Sandra, so he has already bought a camcorder to give to her as a present. Asked about Best Actress Kara Hui wanting to collaborate with him in Alex Law’s new film, Simon replied that he hopes to be able to work with both Kara and Sandra together in the new film. With his recent win, Simon was also asked whether he will be charging ‘Best Actor rates’ now, to which he responded: “[The win] has nothing to do with it. The price will not change – the most important thing is to have a good director and a good script.” His wife Qi Qi expressed that Simon’s feelings have changed, but his way of life has not.

In addition, Qi Qi revealed that on the night he won the award, they were so happy that when they got home, they barely slept and talked until morning instead. She said that their daughter personally made a book for her Daddy and gave it to him as a gift for winning the award, which made Simon extremely happy. She says: “I was actually planning on taking everyone out and having a pool party to celebrate, however since Simon is very low-key, he wanted to go to the local café and have some pineapple buns instead.”

Michelle Ye wins Best Supporting Actress award in HKFA 2010

Posted by Admin 0 comments
29th Hong Kong Film Awards was held last night, 18th April. Michelle Ye who once failed to bag the Best Newcomer award through her outstanding performance in 'Moonlight in Tokyo' four years ago by just the difference of one vote, this time around successfully won the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards, Best Supporting Actress Award, and was crying onstage, thanking the crowd of people she appreciated along her way venturing into the movie industry, as well as her current company Media Asia Films, while not forgetting to thank her previous company TVB, winning cheering applause from the entire audience. Michelle too mentioned her win this time is the biggest 'accident' (which also means surprise in Chinese) in her life.

Although Michelle was commented to be the hot favorite for Best Supporting Actress award before winning the award, Michelle was still very emotional and flabbergasted upon hearing her name for the award. She was in tears while embracing Director Cheng Pou Seoi of 'Accident' by her side. Upon receiving her trophy, Michelle fought back sobs to deliver her appreciation speech, also the most classic highlight of the HKFA night: "I have a very good director friend who once told me, he said, Michelle, no one will want you to be their female lead, how heartbreaking that was, be it the main lead or the supporting cast, we can be just as happy because we have this role in the movie in our life." Following on, Michelle thanked Lam Kin Ngok and Media Asia Film Co. who brought her into the movies industry, as well as director Cheng Pou Seoi and producer Johnny To, their insistence to give her the chance when everyone else doubted her, as well as the outstanding performance of her good friend, Louis Koo which won the movie much attention and publicity, making 'Accident' the biggest accident (surprise) in her life. Finally, Michelle did not forget to thank her previous company TVB which gave her much support and guidance, winning cheering applause from the entire movie audience.

Although Michelle claimed winning the award as an 'accident' (surprise), as the icon of the new generation female celebrity, she has won the award deservingly. Michelle Ye in 'Accident' not only left audience with deepest impression, her outstanding and detailed performance in the movie has won her praises from movie critiques from all regions. A certain established movie appraiser expressed: Michelle Ye's performance in 'Accident' is exceptionally amazing; she has totally leapt out of her performance style during her TVB times, portraying such a complicated interpersonal role in 'Accident' perfectly, especially for the several scenes between her and male lead, Louis Koo, they not only became the highlight of the movie, she is totally absorbed in the movie, her near perfect performance seemingly to have claimed much 'limelight' of the main lead.

Michelle Ye is a rare extraordinary icon of the Hong Kong movie industry. She is not only once the student of State's prestigious Wellesley College, during her college days, she has also once won the first prize of 'Junior Nobel Award' in ISEF, International Global Youth Science Botany Contest. In 1999, she represented New York to participate in TVB's Miss Chinese International pageant and won the hearts of the judges, winning the crown as well as the 'Most Classic Beauty' award. It is such extraordinary appeal of hers which evidently won their hearts over. Her experience allowed her to be exceptionally determined, delivering performance outshining others in her movie career path. After joining TVB, Michelle Ye rapidly becomes TVB's fa dan after popular series such as 'Gods of Honor', 'Eternal Happiness', 'Lofty Waters Verdant Bow' and many more. Later, Michelle Ye transformed to focus on big screens, signing with Hong Kong Media Asia and was highly promoted by her boss Lam Kin Ngok. Director Johnny To who saw her 'heart' other actresses lack when she was just a 'movie newbie', insisted her to be in two of his movies consecutively, 'Vengeance' and 'Accident'. Both the movies won international recognitions, also bringing Michelle Ye several international film festival nominations, becoming the most glorifying actress of Media Asia in the recent years.

When receiving her award, she recalled the hardships in the past: "I have a director friend who once told me: "Michelle, no one will want you to be their main actress!" It was so heartbreaking, but HKFA proved that be it the main actor, or supporting cast, or guest role, even if it was just a small button, screw, every single role is important." Besides thanking the on screen and behind stage crew of 'Accident' as well as producer Johnny To who insisted on having her in the movie, she too thanked her previous company for their guidance and nurturing, winning supportive applause from the entire set, even Miriam Yeung who was presenting the award could not help laughing helplessly!

Lastly, when Michelle Ye specifically thanked main lead of the movie, Louis Koo, she said: "I wish to thank my good friend Louis Koo as well, his exceptional performance helped winning much recognition for this movie, although he is not here, but I see you."

Nick Cheung and Sammi Cheng bringing warmth to Xining

Posted by Admin 0 comments
Tomorrow, Nick Cheung and Sammi Cheng will be traveling to Xining in the Qinghai region to visit quake victims and aid in relief efforts. Nick will only be able to stay 1 night there, as he will be heading off to Beijing the next day to attend an awards ceremony. Fellow artist Max Mok has already left for Xining today.

While attending an event yesterday, Nick talked about the preparations he has already gone through for the Xining trip: “I didn’t get any shots, but I have been taking the special medication to avoid illness from the high elevation levels. I will also be bringing a lot of clean drinking water.” Nick expressed that he is okay with not being able to enter the actual earthquake zone, as the most important thing is to be able to help the victims in whatever way possible, whether it’s through donating money or just showing concern. He says: “I am definitely willing to help out wherever needed. Hong Kong is a small place, but there are a lot of good-hearted, charitable people – it makes me proud to be a Hong Kong citizen.”

In the past, Nick only viewed the charity shows on TV that he would attend as another ‘job opportunity’, however in the past 10 years, he has changed his views and more pro-actively participates in charity functions. He credits this change to the influence from his wife Esther Kwan: “10 years ago, my wife started helping out at a particular charity organization…afterwards, when I started helping out alongside her, I started to realize the true meaning of charity and changed my attitude toward it.” Nick expressed that his daughter is still too young to understand what charity is all about, however since she was born, he has donated HKD$100 in her name each month to the Children’s Cancer Fund.

One of the organizers of the HK fundraising event (to take place 4/26), Gordon Chan, explained the reason why the artists are not able to go directly to the earthquake zone in Qinghai: “Right now, only the military is allowed to send relief items directly into the quake zone, as the area is still very dangerous and it is not easy for outside people to enter the zone. Plus we would not be able to 100% guarantee the safety of the artists in that area – therefore, we arranged for them to visit nearby Xining instead.”

Thursday, April 22, 2010 Posted by Admin 0 comments
After 34 years of hard work in the entertainment industry, things have finally paid off for 55 year old Simon Yam. After winning his first Best Actor trophy from the HK Film Awards several days ago for his stirring portrayal of a benevolent father in "Echoes of the Rainbow", Simon has also won the “Asian Star” award at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) to be held in June. With his acting talent being recognized once again, plus his new film "Ip Man 2" chosen as the opening film for the festival, there is definitely reason for Simon to be happy these days.

Currently in China for a film shoot, when Simon found out about the news, he was very happy: “I have already been told of the good news – very happy! I am planning to fly to New York in June to personally accept the award! At that time, I will probably stay for a week or so and take the opportunity to get some vacation.” (Will your wife be accompanying you?) “Not sure yet, need to see how things go, since it’s still 2 months away.” (Have you gotten more job opportunities since your HKFA win?) “There have always been a lot of job opportunities, so didn’t really notice whether there was an increase since the win.” (There are rumors that "Echoes" director Alex Law is planning on doing a film on the subject of the Chinese railroad workers and is anticipating for you to be the male lead.) Simon responds: “That particular subject matter is pretty complicated. Let’s wait until the script comes out before deciding on anything.” Simon indicated that his filming in China wrapped yesterday, so after a few days rest, then he will be moving on to the next job.

This year’s New York Asian Film Festival will take place from June 25th to July 8th at the Lincoln Center. Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, and Sammo Hung’s new film "Ip Man 2" will be the opening film for the festival. The film is slated to premiere in Hong Kong next week.

4 . 26 Qinghai Earthquake Fundraising Concert: Must donate at least 100 dollars for admission

Posted by Admin 0 comments
The "演藝界情繫玉樹關愛行動" charity concert will be opening on April 26th in Hong Kong Coliseum. Yesterday the details was announced at the press conference. It is a fundraiser with no set target, Eric Tsang, the president of the campaign, expressed that way there won't be any pressures. A small number of funds raised is still a fundraiser, for charity it doesn't have to be 2 billion funds raised. The most important thing is that the Hong Kong people are united in expressing their concern and heart for charity. Max Mok agreed to share the photos he took from the areas affected by the earthquake. Sammi Cheng expressed that she really wants to take action, but the only consideration she has to make if her physical state allows her to do so.

A huge press conference was held yesterday for this concert. Eric Tsang, Chan Ka Seung, the Hong Kong Film Counsil members and 60 other singers and artists attended.

The concert will be held on April 26th from 6-11pm. Eric expressed that the minimum requirement for all admissions is a donation of at least HK$100. Additionally, there will be a memorial area that can hold more than a 1000 people with a screen, a donation box and audience can enjoy the performances as well.

Eric Tsang continued: "In between the 'Artistes 512 Fund Raising Campaign' and the recent Qinghai earthquake, there has been several other natural disasters that happened and this is one of the more severe ones. The entertainment world and citizens are constantly asking what should be done, even the cleaning lady at TVB told me she wanted to do volunteer work. Everyone really has a heart, so we decided to run this fundraiser. We will carefully donate our money for the diaster relief wisely, we won't waste it. When the time comes we will report to the media of the progress, ensuring the victims benefit."

Yesterday, the major television and radio stations, EEG, Gold Label artists all attended. Artists under the Big 4 record companies only had Pakho Chau and Hinson Chou from Warner Music attend. This makes people think that the issue has to do with the copyright issues? Warner's representative explained: "We only knew about the time and location of the press conference yesterday morning, so we were not able to arrange the singers to attend in time." However most of the Universal Music artists expressed their support in this event. Tonight, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Kelly Chan and Hacken Lee will be recording for the theme song.

He has been following the rescue effort and wanted to help. He bought a large number of his records from his own pocket and put them on sale in UNICEF fund raising counter in Time Square. William also personally went their to promote the sale. He hopes the victims can rebuild their homes soon.

When William was filming the music video for "Do You Want To Dance", he had two shinny suits specially made for that MV. When the camera was rolling, the photographer said the suit was too shinny, and the effect was not very good. He suggested William to take off the jacket. William was very embarrassed and said "No clothes to wear again!"

Ron Ng sweating all over while proposing to Kate Tsui

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 Posted by Admin 0 comments
Yesterday Ron Ng was filming for new series "Reunion". Ron held onto a boutique of fresh flowers and a diamond ring to propose to Kate Tsui. Ron said that he doesn't know how to be romantic in realiy, while Kate doesn't like her other half being a romantic playboy. She felt that men who are attentive is more stabled.

It was a hot day during filming, Ron had on a thick jacket and the staff constantly helped him wipe off his sweat. Before filming, he kept a cooler in his pocket, but after an hour of filming he was completely wet. Unfortunate for Kate who had to hug the sweaty Ron while pretending to be sweet.

The scene was about Ron using a batch of red roses and a diamond ring to propose to Kate kneeling on Stanley road. Kate laughed and said that Ron proposed to her several times in the series and had many kiss on the forehead scenes. Save the intense kiss scenes for the youngsters Toby Leung and Him Law. The kiss on the forehead was added on short notice.

Claiming as a workaholic, Kate was asked if she wants her other half to be romantic? She said that romantic is not reality, it's just what you would see in dramas. Also, romantic is almost like a playboy. Often business handsome gentlemen do not have such a big batch of flowers, she rather choose a person who is more attentive, where he can take care of her. Asked if her past boyfriends are the attentive type or the romantic type? She said: "Neither. So far there's only proposing on the streets in series, hasn't happened in reality. It is currently the time where I'm working hard on my career. Won't talk about marriage or discuss about it yet. I feel that flowers is not the most important in proposals, the most important is the heart, the diamond ring and kneel down to express his commitment. In the future, when I get older and talk about it, it'll be good memories. Dream on!" Ron frankly said that he does not know how to be romantic, except in series, his romantic level is really low. He said that in the 30 years of his life, he has never used flowers to propose. Ron smiled and said since he's doing so many romantic things in filming, he'll steal some of the ideas in the future. He felt that men getting married at 40 years old is not too late. But he has no partner, so he won't waste time thinking too much.

Kevin Cheng on: Acting, Rumors, Family, Career Ups & Downs

Posted by Admin 0 comments
This year 40 year old Kevin Cheng has reached the marriagable age. Earlier he and Charmaine Sheh had heated rumors, but that died down as Charmaine moves on to another male lead Moses Chan. Kevin smiled: "Actually just see what series is coming out, then that person would be the one promoted. If not rumoring me, then its Moses." Asked if the "fall out of love" him would feel jealous? He said: "No, so sweet. Next time maybe Bernice Liu (Moses' rumored girlfriend) will be for me? If there is a chance, I hope to collaborate with her and maybe start some rumors. (Earlier your face turned black when mentioning Charmaine?) That's just what the story says! I didn't have a black face. Perhaps my face is tanned! Ah! I'll try not to get tanned in the future, put on lighter make-up." After the rumors, Kevin breathes a sigh a relieve and can joke without any worries.

Rumors: Inevitable

Many think that rumors is used for survival in the entertainment industry, Kevin said it's inevitable: "Rumors is something that can keep popularity, but that's just a surface star. Ultimately your popularity is based on individual performance. How long can a rumor last? How long can those few extra jobs feed you? You can be out pretty quickly if you just count on rumors." As to the many artists being exposed of their marriages, Kevin who has been in the industry for more than 10 years and been single ever since, he expressed until he's at the stage of marriage, he won't announce who his other half is. He said: "Some people say that I'm afraid that it will affect my career, so I won't admit I'm dating. Actually I do hope to find a compatible partner too, but if she's someone outside of the industry, she definitely doesn't want to be pointed at by others. If she's someone from the industry, then we're afraid the rumors could impact our career. So everyone don't block me, don't teach me, let me develop on my own. "

He also revealed his expectations, there is no age limit: "Two years ago, my mother told me that if I want a baby, then do it now. She can even help me take care of my children, unfortunately I'm not even married yet. Hahaha.... so can't rush it. (How about a model that is 10+ years younger than you?) There is no age limit for me, the main focus is if its rushed or not. However, if she's older than me, then I'm afraid she might not be fertile."

Kevin is part of "TVB Party", don't want to be labeled

TVB executives recently been involved in a corruption case, which made many artistes involved and even split them into parties. He has always been said to be part of the "Virgina Lok Party". In 2008 during "Burning Flames 3", Wong He who is part of the "Stephen Chan Party" attracted rumors that Kevin and Wong He did not get along. Now that Stephen lost his power, Kevin said that he does not belong in any party: "I am part of the TVB Party. If you don't have good performance, then whoever got your back doesn't help either. TVB is a large corporation, they won't want a useless person: "I've filmed so many series, its been a long time since I've got 'on bad terms' rumors. (Unhappy?) The issue was a long time ago, but this is one of the series that I was most unhappy while filming."

Kevin admits that he is familiar with the executives, there are sweet and spicy: "There are many things that are easy to say, like discussing the contract. I would try to see if I can discuss of a higher... haha! But the final decision of course is left to TVB! As for the bad part, others will label you, no matter what you do, people will just think that it's because you are familiar with the executives and of the good relationship. This completely destroys your hard work. However at any level, I feel that opportunities are given by others. If you take advantage of that opportunity or not is up to you."

Acting: constantly appreciating

In 2006 at the "TVB Anniversary Awards", Kevin wrote the glorious chapter of his life. His hard work is finally recognized, depending on "Under the Canopy of Love", he earned the "Best Actor" status. However, this was also the time where the public criticized his acting. To step away from the "Canopy" fame, he tried different types of roles such as the big villain in "The Ultimate Crime Fighter" and stepping over the line role in "Last One Standing". Recently in his new series "A Fistful of Stances", he played 2 roles. He felt that actors have to constantly appreciate: "Every series is another experience. Before I took a lesson with Jim Chim, it's not because you think your performance wasn't good enough, but because a good actor will not always stay in the same phase. There needs to be constant input, allowing improvement."

Family: Grateful of Mother

During the interview, Kevin mentioned his 70 year old mother several times, he said if he didn't have her support, he would not have the success he has today. Kevin expressed that the most bitter years was when he was in Taiwan in 1997: "Back then, I went to Taiwan to develop my career. I released my first album and thought that I could start on my second, but because of the financial crisis, I had to wait year after year. Until 1999, I still had to wait. Those were the most bitter 2 years of my life. I was going back and forth from Hong Kong to Taiwan. Back then the trend in Taiwan was singing shows, but the fees received were nearly nothing and that was considered your on-screen exposure. "

In financial crisis, a big man putting out his hands to ask for money from his mother, how upsetting? However Kevin's mom was very supportive of her son's "dreams" and supported him with no questions asked. He gratefully said: "Mom told me to change my profession. She told me to go back to the States and finish the last year of my studies, graduate and get the civil engineering degree. However, I was too stubborn, I didn't want to hit rock bottom and then leave. I don't want people to eliminate me, I didn't want to carry the word 'failure' with me to switch to a new profession."

Return: Finally Success

Back then Dai Si Zong brought Kevin into the industry. Then because of the "lifelong contract", there were some issues. Kevin does not regret joining the entertainment circle: "Back then I didn't graduate from college, it's Teacher Dai who told me to enter the industry. Actually at that time I was not young, my father passed away during that period too. I really wanted to quickly earn money and I liked singing, so I had to suck it up and continue."

Currently Kevin has finally made some success being one of the first line Siu Sangs in TVB. Financially, he satisfies his mother's expectations. He said: "My mom is very happy now, at least she doesn't have to worry about me. Can finally drop the burden and it paid off too! At least every month there is enough leisure money. I just owe my mother a house, but the housing prices are so high, I have to keep working hard!"

Epilogue: Not willing to be harmed

Had always gone down the 'handsome' path, lately Kevin has been getting more and more gossips, but he smiled and said that this helps him maintain the 'true fire', he said: "Gossip news is really untrue. If it's not too over the line, I can just laugh it off. However, there are times where magazines wrote that I had bad attitude at public events, making the public misunderstand me. It's hard on me, it directly affects my income. I have tried to take legal action, but the lawyers told me the magazine writers were too skillful and was not able to do anything."

His acting was often criticized, until 2006 he became TV King for his role in "Under the Canopy of Love". He emotionally expressed: "Mom has supported me for 30 years. Tonight I can finally say that your son didn't choose the wrong profession!"
