As TVB first line Fa Dan, Tavia Yeung’s news is rarely seen. In short, zero rumours and zero gossips. Is this considered a good sign or not? Tavia Yeung who originated from TVB training class has entered this field for 10 years. Last year, she received Best Supporting Actress Award based on her “Lo Lui” role in Moonlight Resonance. She increased her position this year and will compete with Sheren Tang on Best Actress Award. If you think that she will be similar as Yiu Kam Ling that increases her position unscrupulously, then Tavia’s answers will let you down. This is because she just wants to do the best for her job.Browsing back her records, Tavia Yeung joined 13th TVB Acting Training Class and this year is the 10th year since she entered this industry. Her classmates during that year included Raymond Lam and Tsui Wing. The Fa Dan nowadays mostly came out from beauty pageants. It is only Tavia that started out as a “passerby” until the main lead actress now. Her career road seemed similar to [Kam Ling] and no wonder Tavia defended her role. “If everyone starts to see from first episode, then they will know actually Kam Ling is a pitiful girl. Her nature character is not that bad but as she grows up in palace, there are many times when she never harms peoples but ends up being harmed at the end. Slowly, she tends to strike back and after she becomes an imperial concubine, in order to maintain her position, she is unable to extricate herself.”
Learns from Michelle Yim and Suzanna KwanFirst time portraying villain role would lead to many questions amongst audiences, “Tavia Yeung? Can or not?” However, seeing that the series ratings increased continuously, it seems that everyone has casted their votes of confidence on Tavia Yeung. When asked about the difficulties in portraying villain role, Tavia Yeung expressed that it was the eyes expressions. “It was different from my roles in the past. The eyes expressions for villain roles are very important. I did a lot of preparations before that. This is because normally I become a good person and my appearance has already portrayed the important parts. However for villain role, this is not just the appearance looks evil and other peoples will feel that you are evil. Before official filming, I learnt from Michelle Yim and Suzanna Kwan’s performance in Moonlight Resonance. I observed their eyes expressions and practiced at home in front of the mirror. I tried to use my heart to express evilness. The interesting parts of Yiu Kam Ling’s role were evilness in different stages. The makeup towards the later stage was different. I had to lower down my voice tone when I spoke dialogues. I couldn’t recognise myself when I watched back.”
Nowadays the hot topic amongst audiences was regarding the competition for Best Actor and Best Actress. Most people supported Fourth Mistress, Sheren Tang as Best Actress. However there were many netizens praised Tavia Yeung’s outstanding performance and said that she has the chance of competing for Best Actress. Tavia Yeung has the confidence to accept challenges? “I really want to thank the netizen’s supports towards me. But when talked about Best Actress position, I really support Sheren Tang. Sheren Tang really deserves it. A lot of peoples asked me whether I chose to portray villain roles to gain awards. To be truth, everyone wants to win awards. This is because awards represent encouragement and recognition. However it is not the time yet for Best Actress. If I’m nominated, I already feel like winning awards. Most important is to receive a good role. This time is the most difficult role that I have ever portrayed since I entered this industry. My hair ornaments were heavy and every day we needed to film 10-20 hours. My neck was full of pressures. Whenever the camera stopped rolling, Susan Tse, Michelle Yim and me would use neck pillows to protect our neck. Moreover, this is an ancient series. There were a lot of long dialogues. I used twice times than normal to memorize the dialogues. I did not want to NG when filming romance scenes. This was because we had to retake if we NG. This would affect other peoples. Therefore, there were a lot of romance scenes that filmed successfully in one take.”
Zero rumours and zero gossips
Heard from many male artistes said that Tavia Yeung is tomboyish. They don’t have to worry if they collaborate with her. On the interview day, reporter witnessed the relationship between Tavia and other male artistes. Everyone indeed treats her as a guy. Before shooting for article photos, Tavia saw Raymond Wong and Pierre Ngo and greeted them loudly from far. Raymond Wong naughtily said, “Wa! That girl is so pretty!” When Tavia Yeung happily expressed thank you, Raymond Wong said, “I’m talking about your new short haircut!” Everyone laughed after that. Tavia Yeung and Raymond Wong chased each other after that in front of reporters. Both of them played happily. “My character does look like tomboyish. Therefore, the male artistes will heave a sigh of relief when they see me. At least they know there will be no gossips or rumours. Actually since I entered this industry, I’ve already seen many peoples and things but my main attitude principal is to treat peoples sincerely. Normally I do not like to involve in gossips. All these while, there were reporters that told me that I would lose out as I did not have much news and asked me to boil some news. I’m not pretending not to do and in fact I really do not know how to do that. I’m ok if you take my photos when I buy things. Roads that every person take is different. I’m someone that is more down to earth.”
Actually Tavia Yeung is slowly changing. At least we could see from her sexily dressing styles in recent years and it really impressed everyone. Occasionally she would attend TVB high ranked officers’ birthday party. Is this considered a compromise? Tavia Yeung felt that this is a [positive increase in position]. So what is a positive increase in position? “This is a good question. Cannot create rumours, cannot create mess with certain things and peoples. However if it is a requirement for work, then it is acceptable. Regarding the dinner treat by Miss Virginia Lok and Miss Catherine Tsang, I will attend if the time allows. Let’s think about it. If you organize a birthday party, of course you hope that everyone will attend it. This is a respect and manners between peoples. Moreover, we can play crazily on Ms Virginia Lok’s birthday, great!”
Put in efforts for 10 years to improve acting skills
Towards to end of the interview, Tavia was asked whether is it possible an artiste really don’t have wild schemes to increase position? When she saw that those entered this industry later than her like Linda Chung, Fala Chen, and Kate Tsui that had already increased their position, she really didn’t feel impatient? “Actually I felt impatient before. I was impatient in waiting for a good script. Everyone’s schedules are different. I used 10 years to build my career. Actually don’t be mistaken that TVB has many peoples and some might think that nobody knows the efforts that we put in. I remember that after I graduated from the training class, I was sent over to become a helper to carry the awards in awards ceremony. That time, I only appeared on the screen for a few seconds. However the next day, I received a phone call from company and they praised me for keeping a smiling face on that night. After that only I realized that other peoples do not like this job and it was only me that was smiling whole night. Then only I found out peoples would actually notice those insignificant things. Although Hong Kong’s pace is fast, but acting has to be slow. We have to use time to immerse our acting skills. If we only have outward appearance and no acting skills, it is just like having an outward appearance without a soul. I’m willing to act as long as I can even I become “licorice root”. However “licorice root” is not nice to hear. Just like Louise Lee and Suzanna Kwan. They are senior and experienced actress and are not “licorice root”. As long as I can continue to improve then I will work continuously. It is important to do the best for our job in entertainment circles. “
