Hacken Lee’s Hacken’s Concert Hall Live in Malaysia at Genting Highlands

As promised, there were plenty of surprises at Hong Kong artiste Hacken Lee’s Hacken’s Concert Hall Live in Malaysia at Genting Highlands last Saturday. When he sang Pa Pa Sing (Sounds of Father), a track from his soon-to-be released album about the joys of fatherhood, all eyes were fixated on the screen, displaying his son’s photographs. Thus, Lee jokingly lamented that for the first time, nobody was paying attention to him. His son is indeed adorable. Unfortunately, there were no pictures of Lee’s wife.

Another surprise was that Lee performed what was probably his longest encore (he reappeared twice) — close to an hour!

And fans certainly got more than they bargained for when he made his way to the middle of the hall where the fixed seats were and held court on a box.

“This should be where the stage is,” he said. “With four open sides where all my fans can have a closer look.” Well, they certainly needed no invitation as they surged forward.

And as promised, Lee also showed off his new and improved dance moves to the track Ching Lei Joe Sui Joe Hei (Early To Bed, Early To Rise). He also performed a 10-minute song-and-dance routine during the encore that had him out of breath but the audience loved it and that’s what counts.

His costume changes also thrilled the audience as they have probably never seen him in such cute, funky attires.

Despite the dressing, Lee seems to have mellowed somewhat after the birth of his son and had even changed the colour of his hair, from blond to a warmer and more subdued shade of brown.

For the opening act, Lee performed a creative version of the traditional Chinese drum act, which was modified by using chairs. He did a short acrobatic twirl at the end of the song.

Things slowed down a bit after that but picked up again towards the second-half of the show. Lee also paid tribute to Malaysians’ “love affair” with Hong Kong dramas and sang the theme song of The Drive Of Live, which he sang with Taiwanese Xiao Kang. Xiao’s part was done through a video presentation.

The majority of Lee’s tracks for the night were Cantonese numbers but during the final encore, he sang a Mandarin tune.

Lee finally bid his audience goodnight after 3½ hours. He added that if they hadn’t had enough of him, there’s still the Neighbours concert with Alam Tam next year.

Well, that’s something to look forward to.
